Independent auto repair shops, transmission specialists, alignment shops, and quick-lube operators are eligible for the Canada Small Business Financing Program. CSBFP covers vehicle lifts and hoists, alignment racks, diagnostic scan tools, tire mounting and balancing machines, shop air systems, ventilation and exhaust capture, hoist bay leasehold construction, and shop management software, provided annual gross revenue is under $10 million.

Auto repair shops under CSBFP

An independent auto repair shop is one of the cleaner CSBFP files in the trades category. The capital is concentrated in a handful of high-value lines (hoists, alignment equipment, diagnostic tools, tire machines), each with clear vendor invoices and well-understood depreciation. The leasehold component is real but bounded: hoist bays, drains, air compressor lines, and exhaust capture.

A 3-bay general repair shop with one alignment rack typically has $140,000 to $280,000 in capital costs. A 5 to 6 bay shop with a dedicated alignment bay and tire service can reach $320,000 to $480,000, still well inside the $500,000 non-real-property sub-limit.

Eligible CSBFP costs for auto repair shops

Vehicle lifts and hoists (equipment)

  • Two-post asymmetric hoist (9,000 to 12,000 lb): Standard general-repair hoist (Rotary, BendPak, Challenger), $4,500 to $9,500 per hoist installed. A 3-bay shop: $13,500 to $28,500.
  • Four-post drive-on hoist (12,000 to 14,000 lb): For alignment work and undercar diagnostic, $7,500 to $16,000 per hoist installed. Heavier-duty alignment-capable models with rolling jacks at the high end.
  • Scissor lift or mid-rise hoist: For tire and brake work without full undercar access, $3,500 to $8,500. Often used in dedicated tire bays.
  • In-ground hoist: Less common in new builds but used in high-volume shops, $12,000 to $28,000 installed.

Alignment and undercar equipment (equipment)

  • Alignment rack (4-post with imaging):Hunter HawkEye Elite or equivalent imaging alignment system with rack, $48,000 to $95,000 installed. The single largest equipment line on most alignment shop files.
  • Wheel alignment turnplates and slip plates: Included in many alignment rack packages; standalone $2,500 to $6,500.
  • Exhaust pipe bender: Hydraulic mandrel-style bender for exhaust shops, $12,000 to $28,000.

Tire service equipment (equipment)

  • Tire changer (heavy-duty): Bead-buster tire changer for passenger and light-truck tires, $5,500 to $14,000. Run-flat or low-profile capable models at the higher end.
  • Wheel balancer: Computerized wheel balancer with diagnostic functions, $4,500 to $11,000.
  • Tire inflation cage and accessory tools:Air inflation tools, valve stem tools, tire racks, $2,000 to $5,500.
  • TPMS programming tool: Tire pressure monitor programming kit, $1,500 to $4,000.

Diagnostic and shop equipment (equipment)

  • Diagnostic scan tools: OEM-level scan tools (Snap-on, Autel, Launch) plus brand-specific subscriptions, $4,500 to $14,000 in initial hardware. Subscription renewals are not CSBFP-eligible.
  • Brake lathe (on-car or bench): For brake rotor resurfacing, $5,500 to $14,000.
  • Air conditioning recovery and recharge machine: Refrigerant-handling equipment certified for R-1234yf, $4,000 to $9,500.
  • Battery and electrical diagnostic stations: $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Hand tool sets and shop carts: Vendor-supplied hand tool sets per technician, $4,000 to $12,000 per technician. (Note: tools sold to owner-technicians under separate vendor contracts are generally CSBFP-eligible if invoiced to the business.)

Shop air and exhaust (equipment)

  • Air compressor (rotary screw, 15 to 25 HP): Production-volume rotary screw compressor with tank, $8,000 to $18,000 installed.
  • Air piping and drops: Hard-piped air drops to each bay with quick-connects and reel sets, $4,500 to $12,000.
  • Vehicle exhaust capture system: Hose-reel exhaust extraction at each bay (required by most provincial health-and-safety codes for indoor running), $3,500 to $9,500 per bay.

Leasehold improvements

  • Hoist bay construction: Reinforced concrete pads (minimum 6″ thick) sized for hoist bolt patterns, plus drainage to oil-water separator, $8,000 to $18,000 per bay.
  • Oil-water separator and floor drainage: Environmental compliance requirement in most municipalities, $8,000 to $22,000 installed.
  • Bay doors and weatherproofing: Insulated overhead doors per bay, openers, weather stripping, $4,500 to $9,500 per bay.
  • Heating (radiant tube or unit heaters): Shop heating sized for bay door openings, $6,000 to $15,000.

  • Parts catalog and labour-time integration: Mitchell ProDemand, Identifix, or AllData setup, $1,500 to $4,500.

Revenue model: billed labour hours plus parts margin

Auto repair DSCR turns on three numbers: technician productive hours, effective hourly rate, and parts gross margin. Lenders looking at a repair shop file want to see all three explicitly in the projection.

  • Effective billing rate: $135 to $185/hr for general repair in mid-market Canadian markets; $165 to $235/hr for European or specialty work. Posted door rate is typically 10 to 15% above effective billed rate after concessions.
  • Technician productive hours: A productive technician bills 28 to 36 hours per 40-hour week (70 to 90% productivity). Three technicians at 32 billed hours/week × 50 weeks × $150/hr = $720,000 annual labour revenue.
  • Parts gross margin: 35 to 45% on parts; tire and battery margins thinner at 18 to 28%. Parts revenue typically equals 80 to 120% of labour revenue depending on shop mix.
  • Tire and quick-lube revenue: Higher volume, lower margin, tire shop revenue at 25 to 35% gross margin including labour; quick-lube at 45 to 55% gross margin.

After labour (3 technicians plus owner working bays plus service writer), rent, utilities, insurance, supplies: EBITDA approximately $215,000. Annual debt service (CSBFP loan at 7.95%, 10-year amortization): approximately $40,100. DSCR: 5.4x ✓.

What lenders look for in an auto repair file

  • Trade certification. Provincial red-seal Automotive Service Technician certification for the owner (or a documented hired head-tech with red-seal credentials) defends the file’s key-person risk.
  • Environmental compliance plan. Oil-water separator, waste oil disposal contract (typically EnviroPro or Safety-Kleen), and refrigerant recovery handling. Files without an environmental compliance plan get held up at municipal-permit review.
  • Specialty positioning. “General repair” is a crowded category. Files that position against a specialty (European specialist, hybrid/EV-capable, fleet contract, diesel pickup) defend better than generic competitors-on-every-corner positioning.
  • Existing book of business (for buyouts). For ownership transitions, customer file count and recurring fleet or warranty accounts document the goodwill value the buyer is acquiring.
